A Trip Down M-22

If you’ve visited our store during the last year or so, you may have noticed t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and stickers marked with a square that reads:

  • What is M-22?
  • Is that near here?
  • Isn’t that, like, waaaay up north?
  • Why do I keep seeing that everywhere I go?

Clearly, it’s time for us to fill you in on the story behind M-22.

m22Yes, M-22 is a highway. It runs through Northern Michigan, and it’s an incredibly beautiful ride. In the winter it sparkles, it’s lush and green in spring and summer, and the trees that line it are majestic in the fall.

Michigan State Road 22 (M-22) in mid-October.

It’s very pretty. You get the picture. But you’re probably still wondering what it has to do with a family-owned business off of Blue Star, hundreds of miles away from Leelanau Co. This is where Matt and Keegan Myers (also known as “The Broneah Brothers”) come in. For them, M-22 is not just a road; it’s a way of life. In their mission statement, they explain:

“Founded by kiteboarders in search of epic wind and waves, M-22 was created to express a common passion for Northern Michigan. However, M-22 shares this passion beyond Michigan’s borders. It is marked by the simplicity and appreciation for natural wonders such as bays, beaches and bonfires, dunes and vineyards, cottages, friends and family everywhere.”

The Broneah Brothers aren’t just talk. Out of appreciation for the natural world that surrounds them, they have taken a holistic approach to business. They work with recycled, American-made materials as much as possible, embellish all products locally, and donate a percentage of all sales to the Leelanau Conservancy. Big believers in the 1% for the Planetconcept, they give $1,000 for every $100,000 in gross sales.

We may be several hours away from the Broneah Brothers’ wind and waves, but a passion for things like bonfires, beaches, vineyards, and good company is something we can certainly appreciate. The Sharks are all about nature, simplicity, and local pride, whether it’s found along a highway, atop a mountain, in an ocean, or by our very own Saugatuck Dunes. We’re pretty sure our customers share this devotion, which is why we’ve stocked up on goods by M-22!

We hope you’ll stop by the store to check out our M-22 sweatshirts, caps and stickers if you haven’t already. If you want to learn more about M22’s mission and product, visit m22.com. See you soon!

As a relatively new Michigander, I thought the stickers were for the highway and didn’t know about the background of the M-22 brand. I’ll have to pick up some of their stuff now, they seem like great guys. LOVE the Landsharks shop and Saugatuck! Thanks : )
